Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia (Uyuni saline land)
February 2008
As a matter of fact Salar de Uyuni is dry for most part of the year and resembles a huge air field made of well compacted common salt. But I got there in the rain season, so I had to splash through the water that covered everything up to the horizon, creating an illusion of dangerous «The Maracot Deep» (though it did not exceed 40-50 cm).
Local guides, who like to spread sinister rumors, used to say that several cars with tourists that took risk to set for a trip, died in the salty deep. They did not know the route and got lost. In fact, «legending» is a correct tactics: if all tourists start individually roam around the saline land, the local guides will remain unemployed.
If I'm asked «by the results of the trip» was it worth going to such a distant spot? - I will tell without any pressure — it was worth! Several months after that trip I look through the photos and have a nostalgic thought, and why not repeat everything again? And the romantic echo of subconsciousness replies: get your ducks in a row! Uyuni is waiting for you!
