Peruvian society has roughly reacted to visit of Humala to Venezuela

January 8, 2006
Appearance of Ollanta Humala in Caracas in the company of Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales stirred the public opinion of Peru.

Politicians and mass media of the right wing immediately showered the accusations on the candidate to presidency. The nearest opponent to Humala, conservative candidate Lourdes Flores, declared to the journalists that she found a very dangerous for Peru the alliance taking shape in Caracas: it would lead to decline in development and increase of poverty.

Another candidate to presidency Jaime Salinas (party Justicia Nacional) expressed himself more elegantly: he was satisfied by the visit of Humala to Caracas because in that way Humala opened his game and revealed to the whole world what a hypocrite he was.

Newspapers did not spare “epithets” either. “La Republica” under the headline “New Andes troika” (“La nueva troika andina”) printed the picture of Chavez, Morales and Humala. Paper «El Comercio» called Humala «the clone of Chavez», whereas «Correo» – «another boy of Fidel Castro».

The government of Peru did not remain indifferent either. They immediately called their Ambassador in Venezuela for consultations: allegedly Chavez interferes into domestic affairs of Peru. Chavez immediately responded to that by saying that elections were constantly takeing place throughout the world and candidates travelled around the world and nobody made any diplomatic scandals because of that.

Ex-president of Peru Alan Garcia reacted to the visit of Humala to Caracas in a different way. According to him “meetings of this kind only strengthen the Latin American society”.

As it is known, in Caracas, Ollanta Humala enlisted the support of Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales. Moreover, the presidents of Venezuela and Bolivia called for left forces of Peru to unite around Ollanta Humala and support him on his road to the Presidential chair of the country.

Presidential elections in Peru will take place on April 9 of the current year. According to recent polls O. Humala and L.Flores - having 22% and 21% respectively,s are leading in the struggle for the electorate votes. Ex-presidents A Garcia and V. Paniagua are following them.
