The Russian author best-seller that is “unwanted” in Russia. The novel “Bolivian tiny God” by Nil Nikandrov.
March 21, 2005

The novel by Nil Nikandrov “Bolivian tiny God” (the first title “Death on the Robinson island”) published in Venezuela, is being gulped in the Russian-language colonies in many countries of Latin America. The writer and journalist has never claimed to be the “Russian Bruno Traven” traveling incognito around Latin American countries. And still, it is difficult to find a place on the continent and neighboring to it islands, missed by Nikandrov, for whom the quest for exotic impressions and Eldorado's mirages became the style of life.
The abundant detective literature of Russia during the last decade has not practically touched the problem of “Russians abroad”. The novel “Bolivian tiny God” describes dramatic destinies of Russian people in the post-soviet epoch, their hard comprehension and – quite often – tearing away the events of the Gorbachev and Yeltsin epoch. This tendency of the novel, evaluating the “reforms” in Russia as the suicidal experiment, is perceived by the modern Russian publishers with fear and malevolence. They, being the militant neo-liberals in their overwhelming majority, subject to ruthless censorship everything, that does not fall into the idolized by them “new world order”, which threatens Russia, according to the writer, by new cataclysms and social shocks. It is due to these reasons the novel, “without justification of reasons” is being shyly rejected by these publishers, that, partially reflects the inherited from the soviet times syndrome of “authorities” fear.
The tense plot of the novel “Bolivian tiny God” is interlaced with multiple scenes of the life of Russian foreign officials and emigrants. Among the characters there is an embassy in La Paz security officer Vladlen Gonchaiev, who will be able to solve the mystery of Petrakov disappearance; charming and ominous oligarch Boris Gerkovich; leader of the “white” Russian colony Cyrill Minaiev; taro cards foreteller Theresa Latoshek; members of ufological expedition of the AS of Russia; TV journalist, “filth remover”, Yuri Kus'kov and many others. What has actually happened to the ambassador of Russia? Why have the emissaries of the firm “Erigon-Russich” in the free trade zone in the Chilean city Iquique, frequented to La Paz - “Lapazville” in the slang of local Russians? What is the reason, due to which the oligarch Gerkovich hides himself in the remote Bolivia? To these and many other questions separately (that is the nature of Russians - everyone in oneself) try to answer Gonchaiev and Bazhenov.
In one of his recent interviews Nil Nikandrov said, that in spite of militant censorship of publishers in Russia, his novel “Bolivian tiny God” all the same will break through to the masses of Russian readers, because the “soapy detective chewing gum, imposed by the “merchants-bookbakers”, causes even bigger disgust. The period of total idiotization is nearing its end”...
