Venezuela: People elected Chavez

The presidential elections took place in Venezuela. They were peaceful with high activity of population: attendance exceeded 76%. Despite the fact that polling stations were to be closed at 4 p.m. local time, some of them remained open till the time, when all standing in line people cast their votes. In view of this the Central Election Committee (Consejo Nacional Electoral) slightly slowed down annunciation of preliminary results. Exit polls at the doors of polling stations gave an explicit victory to Hugo Chavez - 67% against 33% to leader of opposition Manuel Rosales.

Late at night, after calculation of 78.31% of votes, election committee announced the following results: Chavez – 61.35 %, Rosales - 38.39 %.
